'Lost Souls' Solo Exhibition Constantin Werner

Bendix Building

1206 S Maple Ave

Los Angeles, CA 90015

Constantin Werner is a German/American painter, writer, and film director, based in Los Angeles. His lyrical, neo-expressionist paintings and drawings are in tune with his dark, melancholic film and video work, addressing the themes Death, Eros, spirituality, and loneliness.

After growing up in Munich, Constantin studied art in Paris at ESAG Penninghen and philosophy at the FU Berlin. Since then he has directed the independent feature films Dead Leaves and Pagan Queen, the plays Box and Blackbird (written by Adam Rapp), and over a dozen music videos. He has worked in New York City, Los Angeles, Germany, and in the Czech Republic.

The first public display of his artwork was at the Red Dot Miami Art Fair 2019 (@ Blu Egg Gallery Miami). His first solo exhibition "Lost Souls" is produced in partnership with Wonzimer Gallery.

The show consists of 22 oil paintings, charcoal and ink drawings, created in 2019 and 2020. They touch upon the Zeitgeist before and during Covid19.

Spiritual themes are at the center of Constantin's work, with a special interest in ancient, lost cultures. His movie Pagan Queen is set among the tribes of Eastern Europe 700AD. Two of his paintings - Spirits of the Salton Sea and Spirits of Indio - are studies on the restless souls of the Cahuilla Indians, who still live outside Palm Springs in the desert. They were painted while Constantin was working on a script set among the Cahuillas in pre-Colombian Southern California.

Constantin has always been a melancholic, solitary spirit. This personal tendency reached a totally new, more general dimension during the quarantine. Some of the pieces address the COVID crisis directly, as they were created in the midst of it - others seem to foreshadow.
